Honoring a Legacy:
The Memorial Unveiling of "The Olympian"

A Tribute to Two Remarkable Families

On 11/29/2024, family, friends, and members of the Hazleton community gathered at Hazleton Area High School to unveil "The Olympian," a stunning monument dedicated to the memory of Fred and Marilyn Small and Maurice and Sidell Burkat. Commissioned by their son and grandson, William Small, a financial planner based in Delray Beach, Florida, this tribute honors the enduring legacy of two families who valued education, family, and community.

Fred and Marilyn Small, both lifelong educators, instilled a passion for learning and giving back to the community. Their influence, along with the cherished guidance of Maurice and Sidell Burkat, continues to inspire those who knew them.

About "The Olympian"

About "The Olympian"

Created by celebrated artist Salvadore DeFazio, "The Olympian" is a towering stainless-steel figure emerging from a flame painted in red and yellow hues. Mounted on a black rock and held by a sculpted hand, the piece symbolizes the harmonious balance between strong minds and strong bodies—a timeless principle embraced by both the ancient and modern Olympics.

DeFazio described the monument as an "allegory of education," aligning with the values championed by the Small and Burkat families.

The ceremony brought together friends, family, and the Hazleton community in a poignant celebration of legacy. Among the attendees was Dante Calabria, a friend of the Small family and former basketball player who represented the Italian national team. Calabria shared heartfelt reflections on the family's values, describing them as "pillars of love, faith, and community."

Superintendent Brian Uplinger praised the addition of "The Olympian" to the campus, noting how it showcases art while inspiring students and community members alike.

A Gift to Inspire Generations

A Gift to Inspire Generations

"The Olympian" joins two other iconic sculptures by DeFazio on the Hazleton Area High School campus—"Knowledge," created in 1993, and "Democracy," created in 1998. These works, donated by individuals and families who wished to leave something permanent for the community, continue to inspire students and visitors.

William Small commissioned this piece in memory of his parents and grandparents as a way to honor their values and contributions. "I always try to honor my mother and father," he said, crediting them with shaping his personal and professional success.
